In november 2007 I started on what would turn out to be my biggest project ever:
A new cork deck for my stringer 915.
When I bought the boat, the old teak veneer deck was worn and needed replacing. I immediatly thought of cork as a replacement.
The main reasons for choosing cork:
- Ecological alternative to teak and more people friendly too. The best teak for decks comes from Myanmar where the lumber is ripped from the forrest without replanting and the profits go to a nasty government.
- cheaper than teak
- easier to work with, less tension for laying curves, softer and more uniform material
- very good non skid characteristics
- nice feel
- high insulation factor, both thermal and accoustic
I will be working on this Web book for some time so watch this space!
